Curriculum for Excellence

Curriculum for Excellence 3-18

The City of Edinburgh Council Children and Families Department is fully committed to placing children, young people and families at the heart of all our services.

The values, purposes and principles for the curriculum 3 to 18 in Scotland are set out in Curriculum for Excellence. Curriculum for Excellence represents the biggest educational reform since the introduction of the 5-14 programme. Our aspiration for every child and young person is that they should be:

  • successful learners
  • confident individuals
  • responsible citizens
  • effective contributors

Curriculum for Excellence also aims to:

  • simplify and prioritise the current curriculum
  • encourage more learning through experiences
  • create a single framework for the curriculum and assessment 3-18
  • ensure effective transitions from pre-school to primary and primary to secondary
  • equip young people with an appropriate education, employment and training choices post 16
  • recognise and celebrate wider achievement in all its forms
