Fairtrade News and EventsAugust 2010: B&Q launches Fairtrade Cotton products B&Q have announced it will be selling its first Fairtrade products. From August B&Q will sell a range of Fairtrade cotton bedding in 100 stores. 2010 marks the fifth year anniversary of the introduction of Fairtrade cotton into the UK market. There are now over 100 Fairtrade cotton licensees in the UK - a mixture of brands, retailers and companies. Go to the Natural Choices website for more on this. February 2010: Stenhouse Primary School gains Fairtrade School status Stenhouse Primary school has become the latest Edinburgh school to receive Fairtrade School status. Current EventsFair Trade on the Fringe Taking place on Princes Street/Castle Street from Saturday 14th to Sunday 22 August, this is the place to be for fair and ethical shopping this summer. Past EventsFairtrade Fortnight 2009 The Lord Provost hosted a very successful event (on behalf of the Edinburgh Fairtrade City Initiative) in the City Chambers on the 23 February 2009 to mark Fairtrade Fortnight 2009. The event was supported by the City of Edinburgh Council, the Scottish Fair Trade Forum, Scotmid and Imani Development. Towera Jalakasi from Malawi gave an inspiring talk on her work with fair trade. She has extensive experience working to empower small businesses and promoting fair trade amongst a wider range of producers in Malawi. Continuing with fair trade links in Malawi, Imani Development spoke about their current project work. The evening was rounded off by Rose Murray Brown (Scotsman) leading a wine tasting event sampling 13 of the Co-op’s wines. The annual Lord Provost Awards were handed out. The winners are as follows:
Edinburgh Schools Showcase St Thomas of Aquin’s RC High School received its Fairtrade School accreditation in December 2008. This is first school in Edinburgh to receive Fairtrade school accreditation. On the 3rd March 2009 an Edinburgh Schools Fairtrade Showcase was held to celebrate St. Thomas of Aquin’s success. This was attended by both secondary and primary schools across the city to promote fair trade. A high calibre of fair trade project work was on display. DVDs showing ongoing fair trade work in schools were shown to the audience which included local politicians, a member of staff from the Fairtrade Foundation and fair trade producer Alex Chamas from Bolivia. Fair Trade Bookmark Deanpark Primary School ran a competition to design a bookmark promoting fair trade. The five winning designs were printed and are now available in libraries across the city. This was run in partnership with the Balerno Fairtrade Group and was funded by the Scottish Fairtrade Forum. Edinburgh's first Fairtrade Fortnight Edinburgh received its Fairtrade City Status from Harriet Lamb, Director Fairtrade Foundation at an event in the Filmhouse in February 2004.
