Fairtrade in Edinburgh

Fairtrade is a growing international movement to guarantee that producers in poor countries receive a fair price for their goods. It means that workers benefit from a decent wage and working conditions and that the price they receive for their goods reflects the true cost of production. It also allows for investment in safe water supplies, sanitation, healthcare and education. Globally, consumers worldwide spent £1.6bn on fair trade certified products in 2007. This is a 47% increase on the previous year directly benefiting over 7 million people - farmers, workers and their families in 58 developing countries.

Fairtrade Foundation

The Fairtrade Foundation was established to improve the position of the poor and marginalised producers in the developing world. The Foundation encourages UK industry and consumers to support fairer trade and to purchase fair trade products. Products that carry the FAIRTRADE Mark, the only independent consumer guarantee, ensure that producers in the developing world get a better deal. 70% of the population recognise the FAIRTRADE MARK. Findings also show understanding of the concept behind the Mark has increased, with 64% of the population linking the Mark to a better deal for producers in the developing world.

Scottish Fair Trade Nation Campaign

The Scottish Fair Trade Forum was established by a group of Scottish Fair Trade campaigners, Scotland-based NGOs and the Scottish Government in January 2007 to take forward Scotland's work to become one of world's first Fair Trade Nations.

The Fair Trade Nation campaign builds on the successful Fairtrade Towns movement in the UK. The Forum works closely with the Fairtrade Foundation and other fair trade organisations, companies and groups throughout the UK and elsewhere.

For more information on the Scottish Fair Trade Forum and the criteria for Fair Trade Nation Status go to www.scottishfairtradeforum.org.uk.
