Food Hygiene Information Scheme

The Food Hygiene Information Scheme allows consumers to see how well food businesses in Edinburgh have fared in food hygiene inspections and aims to improve consumer confidence and maintain high standards of food hygiene.

The Food Hygiene Information Scheme in Scotland has been run in Edinburgh, Perth, Aberdeen, Fife and Renfrewshire as a 2 year pilot until November 2008. It was developed and implemented by the Food Standards Agency Scotland with the support of consumer organisations, industry and local authorities.

Around 1,000 food businesses within the New Town, Old Town and Tollcross areas of Edinburgh have been participating in the pilot, they have been asked to display certificates prominently on the door or window of their premises, showing how well they did in their last hygiene inspection. These certificates, based on current inspection records say “Pass” or “Improvement Required”. An “Awaiting Inspection” certificate is available for new businesses.
