Stockbridge Primary School catchment review

This consultation ended on Friday 5th June 2009. It is intended that a report will be taken to Education, Children and Families Committee on 8th September 2009 on the outcomes of the consultations and this will consider the issues that have been raised by letters and e-mails or via the public meetings at Flora Stevenson Primary School and Stockbridge Primary School.

Summary

Public consultation was sought on proposals to more than double the size of the Stockbridge catchment by making a corresponding reduction to the Flora Stevenson catchment area.

Background

A proposal in the 2007 Children and Families Estate Review sought the closure of Stockbridge Primary School with pupils being accommodated at Flora Stevenson’s and Broughton Primary Schools.

The underlying rationale for this proposal was the small number of pupils living in the school catchment (currently 64) which meant that the school roll was unsustainable unless supported by placing requests from surrounding schools.

There was opposition to this proposal and representations were made by the Stockbridge Parent Council to undertake a review of the catchment area with a view to extending the Stockbridge catchment boundary to more accurately reflect the pupil draw and the geographical area of Stockbridge.

To address the issue of the small catchment area and to take account of the representation made it is proposed to more than double the size of the Stockbridge catchment by making a corresponding reduction to the Flora Stevenson catchment area.

It is proposed to consult on the proposals until the 5th June 2009 and report back to committee on the outcomes of the consultation on 8th September 2009. If approved by Council, the proposal will require Scottish Ministers consent under current statutory requirements as both schools are over 80% occupied.
