Budding artists wanted

As he celebrates his 90th birthday we’re asking young people under 14 to show us what Nelson Mandela means to them by submitting works of art to commemorate his big day.

Entries can take any form – drawings, paintings, collages, they can be a picture of the man himself, a representation of peace or a symbol of South Africa. The more inventive, the better! The winning entry will then be framed and hung in the Nelson Mandela room in the City Chambers.

Mr Mandela received the Freedom of the City in 1997 and he has a long association with the Council. A range of activities to celebrate his birthday have been going on across the city. The South African flag was flown over the City Chambers on his actual birthday, July 18th and a special flowerbed in the shape of the South African flag with the logo for his AIDS charity 46664 has been laid in east Princes Street Gardens. A birthday book from the people of Edinburgh also received dozens of signatures and has been sent to Mr Mandela.

Now we’re looking for a permanent reminder of the celebrations by hanging a commemorative artwork by a local youngster. So if your kids have extra time on their hands over the summer holidays then this is an ideal activity to keep them entertained!
