Right to buy
Buying your Council house
If you are a Council tenant and you want to buy the property you're living in you can apply to buy by filling in an 'application to purchase' form. You can get a form from the Council House Sales Team.
After you fill in the 'application to purchase' form we will arrange for your home to be valued. When we get the valuation we will deduct your discount and make you an offer. You will have two months to decide whether or not you want to accept our offer. You are not obligated to accept our offer but if you do accept it we'll work with you and your solicitor to start the process of buying.
There are different rules for buying and for discounts for tenants who have been in their property for a long time than for tenants who have been in their property for a shorter time. Your Right to Buy Your Home guide will give you more details.
After 1 March 2011, first time council tenants will no longer have a right to buy their council homes. If an exisiting tenant moves to a new supply council house they will also not have a right to buy while living in that property. New supply houses are those that were built after 25 June 2008 or bought by the Council since that date.
Please contact the Council House Sales Team if you have any questions or need to talk about your options.
