Class organisation in primary schools
How primary classes are organised

Each year, we look at each school's expected pupil roll to decide the best way to organise the classes.
The number of classes is based on the number of pupils at each year stage from P2 to P6, as well as the expected intake of new P1 pupils. P1 intakes have to be managed across the city to ensure consistency and to comply with legislation. This allows priority to be given to pupils living within a school's catchment and then, where possible, pupils whose parents have made a placing request.
Although schools are usually able to tell parents by the mid June which class their child will be in for the following session, class organisation may change because of changes to the roll or other factors within the school. It is sometimes necessary to change the class organisation during the summer break or, occasionally, between August and the October break.
