On 21 March 2012, the Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning announced additional support for secondary schools, reached in agreement with the EIS, around preparation for the new National Qualifications. Included in this support is provision of two additional In-Service days.

Following discussion with secondary head teachers and teaching unions, the following dates were agreed as the additional In-Service dates for secondary schools:

• Tuesday 23 October 2012
• Monday 18 February 2013

Schools should advise parents of these changes.

Autumn term

• Monday 13 August 2012 - Staff resume (Five In-Service days for all schools)  
• Tuesday 14 August 2012 - Staff only (Five In-Service days for all schools) 
• Wednesday 15 August 2012 - Pupils resume
• Schools closed Monday 17 September 2012 - Autumn Holiday
• Tuesday 18 September 2012 - All resume
• Friday 12 October 2012 - Mid-term, All break
• Monday 22 October 2012 - Staff resume (Five In-Service days for all schools) 
• Tuesday 23 October 2012 - Primary, Nursery and Special pupils resume (In-Service for Secondary Schools only)
• Wednesday 24 October 2012 - Secondary School pupils resume
• Thursday 20 December 2012 - Term ends

Spring term

• Monday 7 January 2013 - Staff Resume (Five In-Service days for all schools)
• Tuesday 8 January 2013 - Pupils resume
• Friday 8 February 2013 - Mid-term, all break
• Monday 18 February 2013 - Primary, Nursery and Special pupils resume (In-Service for Secondary Schools only)
• Tuesday 19 February 2013 - Secondary School pupils resume
• Friday 22 March 2013 - Term ends

The Easter break incorporates the following holidays:

• Friday 29 March 2013 - Good Friday
• Monday 1 April 2013 - Easter Monday

Summer term

• Monday 8 April 2013 - All Resume
• Monday 15 April 2013 - Spring Holiday, schools closed
• Monday 6 May 2013 - May Day, schools closed
• Tuesday 7 May 2013 - All resume
• Monday 20 May 2013 - Victoria Day, schools closed
• Tuesday 21 May 2013 - Staff resume (Five In-Service days for all schools) 
• Wednesday 22 May 2013 - Pupils resume
• Friday 28 June 2013 - Term ends

The above timetable allows for staff and pupil attendance as follows:

• Pupils - Term 1, 85 (84) days; Term 2, 49 (48) days; Term 3, 56 (56) days; Total 190 (188) days
• Staff - Term 1, 88 days; Term 2, 50 days; Term 3, 57 days; Total 195 days

2013/2014

The start date for session 2013/2014 for pupils has been provisionally identified as Wednesday 14 August 2013.
