Curriculum for Excellence will improve education for children and young people by putting their learning experiences at the heart of education. Some important changes of emphasis will refresh learning and teaching. Curriculum for Excellence has been described as 'evolutionary'. Key factors are:
- Children are at the centre of teaching and learning
- Literacy, numeracy and health and wellbeing will be delivered across all subjects by all teachers
- The current Curriculum 3-5 and the 5-14 Curriculum will be replaced by the Curriculum 3-18 to ensure continuity in each child's learning
- There are six curricular levels or stages, so learning progression is clearly set out
- Eight Curricular Areas have been mapped out - sciences, languages, mathematics, expressive arts, social studies, technologies, health and wellbeing, religious and moral education. As well as the curriculum areas, all professionals who work with children will develop, reinforce and extend skills across learning in health and wellbeing, literacy and numeracy.
- Each of these Curricular Areas contains descriptions of Experiences and Outcomes which reflect children's learning and achievements. These are statements from a pupil's perspective and often take the form of: "I can..." or "I am..."
We have high expectations of our young people. Curriculum for excellence will promote and develop the four capacities that provide the foundations for all to flourish.
