How the Council Works

How decisions are made in the Council

The Council meeting is made up of all the councillors elected to the City of Edinburgh Council. The City of Edinburgh Council is elected under proportional representation and there are 58 councillors in 17 multi-member wards. The Council usually meets once a month and is responsible for taking decisions, but it can delegate decisions to Committees, Sub-Committees or officers.

The Committee system operated by the Council is changing on 29 October 2012 and information on the new system will be updated in time  for its launch. Information on the current committee system is available.
