City Development is responsible for a range of services that aim to ensure Edinburgh has a strong sustainable economy and is seen as a prosperous place in which to live, work and study or visit.
The directorate guides the economic development of the city by enabling business investment in the city, co-ordinating development in the major development zones, championing enterprise and innovation in Edinburgh 's business community and supporting people into work and educational opportunities so that the city can grow economically in a manner that is sustainable in the long term.

The department has an annual budget of over £6m and has around 70 staff. Its responsibility is to ensure Edinburgh 's economy delivers increased investment, jobs and opportunities for all, by ensure the following outcomes are delivered:
- Edinburgh is a magnet for high value foreign direct investment, strengthening and diversifying the city's economy.
- Excellent market intelligence ensures a skilled supply of labour and capital to new and expanding businesses.
- We leverage the value of Edinburgh 's physical, social and knowledge based assets to grow new jobs for the city.
- Edinburgh has an entrepreneurial 'can do' culture and a vigorous rate of new business start ups.
- We have reduced poverty and inequality in Edinburgh by tackling deprivation through well targeted regeneration programmes.
