Gillian trained as a primary school teacher in Hampshire in 1980, going on to teach in the New Forest. She later trained and worked as an education psychologist in Humberside, Birmingham, Hereford and Worcester.

Before coming to Edinburgh, Gillian worked in Oxfordshire County Council for 14 years in a number of roles including Principal Psychologist, Head of Special Needs and Head of Children and Young People.

She was the CoSLA representative on the programme board for the early years framework.

She is a member of the Board of Children in Scotland representing the Association of Directors of Education.
