Proposal to close Westfield Court Nursery School

The City of Edinburgh Council's decision 2 February 2012 to close Westfield Court Nursery School was referred to Scottish Ministers, as required by legislation. The Scottish Government has now confirmed by letter, which may be viewed on the Scottish Goverment website, that the decision will not be called in. The recommendations of the Consultation Outcome Report, (pdf, 122KB) agreed by the Councillors on 2 February can now be implemented.

At the meeting on 2 February 2012, the City of Edinburgh Council decided to close Westfield Court Nursery. Scottish Ministers have been notified of this decision. Before the closure decision can be implemented the public have a three week period (from 2 February) when anyone can ask Ministers to call in that decision for review. Details of how to do this can be found in the consultation report that was published in January. That three week period expires on 22 February 2012. Ministers then have a maximum of another three weeks to consider the details of our consultation documents and any representations received before they reach a decision on whether or not to call in the closure decision for further investigation.  That period expires on 14 March 2012. We will publish the Ministers' decision here once it is received.

Previous update: Consultation Outcome Report Published

In the autumn of 2011 we consulted on a proposal to permanently close Westfield Court Nursery School because of concerns about how suitable the accommodation is for young children. A public meeting was held in September 2011 to discuss the matter and to take questions. We also asked people to submit any comments or questions they had in writing. The outcome report which is published today (12 January 2012) addresses all of the points raised in the consultation and recommends that Westfield Court closes.

What happens next?
The report and its recommendations will be fully discussed by the City of Edinburgh Council at the meeting on Thursday 2 February 2012. The Councillors will make a decision on the nursery's future at this meeting. This page will then be updated following the meeting.
