Land Contamination

Potentially contaminated land

City scape

Like much of Scotland, Edinburgh has areas where chemicals may be present in the soil. This is mostly due to industrial processes in the past, but chemical contaminants may also occur naturally.

How to deal with potentially contaminated land

In most cases, confirmed or suspected land contamination is dealt with through the planning process. If you think contamination may be an issue in any development of any scale, please refer the following booklets which can be found the right hand side of the page, under downloads.

  • Guidance for Applicants and their Agents
  • Land Contamination and Development Management.
