How to register a birth

Documents that are helpful

If your baby was born in hospital you should bring the Birth Information Card that your midwife has given you, or birth notification slip if you had your baby at home.

It is also helpful for you to bring other documents along with you;

  • If you are married/registered civil partners you should bring your marriage/civil partnership certificate .
  • You and/or your partners own birth certificates if you have them
  • any statutory declaration you may have had to make

Please don't worry if you can't find any of the documents - just book and attend your birth registration appointment with us.

We will give you an abbreviated birth certificate showing your baby's name, date and place of birth free of charge. This certificate is fine to send off with your child benefit application.

A full birth certificate showing you as parent(s) costs £10.00, you will need this to apply for a passport for your baby. Please remember all baby's need their own passports to be able to travel.
