There are extra rules if you:
- are single and do not live with any dependants
- are a couple and do not live with any dependants
- have lived in care (care leaver) and are under age 22
- are severely disabled
- have an extra bedroom for a carer who stays overnight
If you are aged under 35, are single and do not live with any dependants, you can only get the local housing allowance shared accommodation rate. If you are single, aged 25 to 34 and lived in a hostel, you may be entitled to more.
If you are 35 or over, single and do not live with any dependants, you will get the one bedroom local housing allowance rate if you live in a self contained property. If you live in shared accommodation you will get the local housing allowance shared accommodation rate unless you have two or more rooms (bedrooms or living rooms) that are for your use only.
By a self-contained property we mean one where you have your own room plus your own:
- bathroom or toilet
and - kitchen (or facilities to cook with)
For example, this could be a one-bedroom flat.
