City of Edinburgh Council

Council tax disabled persons reduction

How to apply for disabled person reduction

You may be able to claim this reduction if:

  • someone living at this address, whether an adult or child, is permanently disabled
  • the property you are claiming the reduction on is the disabled person's sole or main residence and the property must contain at least one for the following:
  • there is an additional bathroom or kitchen within the property or;
  • a room, but not a bathroom, kitchen or lavatory, which is mainly used by the disabled person or
  • sufficient floor space to permit the use of a wheelchair.
If you qualify for the disabled person reduction, your property valuation band will drop by one band. For example, if your property is in valuation band 'F' it will drop to band 'E' for as long as you are entitled to disabled person reduction. Your water and waste water (sewerage) charges will also drop by a band.
You can apply for the disabled person reduction yourself or on someone's behalf. To do so see the Discount, exemption and reduction forms page for more details.
