Council tax empty property discount
How to apply for empty property discount
You can apply for empty property discount if:
- there are no adults living in the property or
- the property is empty and it's no-one's sole or main place of residence but is furnished.
Since 1 April 2006, the discount is 10% off the Council tax charge. There is no reduction in the water and waste water (sewerage) charge. A discount of 50% may apply depending on the circumstances and the length of time the property has been empty.
Second Homes
If you have a second home, you can write to us stating the property is a second home giving us details of the property you live in and pay Council tax for. If a discount is awarded, it will only apply to the Council tax charge, not the water and waste water (sewerage) charge.
Leaving your property
You may be able to claim a discount if are leaving the property for a period of time. You will need to let us know how long you are going away for and if the property will be furnished or not during this time.
