Making enquiries at Edinburgh City Archives

Can I get help with my research at Edinburgh City Archives?

Visitors are welcome and encouraged to carry out their own research in our public searchroom.  If a visit is not possible, we do offer a limited remote enquiry service.

Remote enquiries

At present enquiries can be made by letter, telephone or email using the contact details displayed on this page.

Please note that because of the volume of queries received by Edinburgh City Archives we can only spend a limited amount of time per enquiry. We cannot undertake in-depth research on behalf of any one individual. Where we are unable to assist, we will try our best to suggest alternative avenues of research or professional, independent research assistance.

Subject guides

Edinburgh City Archives' staff has produced information to help with certain kinds of research. Work on a variety of subject guides is in progress and those which have been completed are available to download on this page. These aim to summarise the types of records we hold on specific topics and therefore allow for easier, more directed research. These guides are intended only as introductions to archival research materials and a more in-depth study of our catalogued records may also be required.
