Cycling around Edinburgh

Here are some resources to help you find safe, convenient and fun cycle routes in the city.

Cycle Journey Planner and SatNav

The Cyclestreets route planner can suggest quieter or faster routes for you to get from A to B depending on your preference.

Access it via a free iPhone/Android app or get a bicycle SatNav!

Edinburgh Cycle Map (by Spokes, approx. £5.95)

A map showing on and off-road cycle facilities across most of the city (excludes South Queensferry/Kirkliston). To get hold of a copy you can:

Explore Edinburgh by Bike (free area cycle maps)

Our Explore Edinburgh by Bike leaflets cover the whole of Edinburgh, area by area, and include detailed cycle maps and ideas for things to see. You can download the leaflets or order copies from Clarence (0800 232323 / clarence@edinburgh.gov.uk).

Cycling in the Pentlands

The Pentland Hills Regional Park  is a great place to enjoy on wheels! Over the past few years, mountain biking has become a popular activity in the Pentland Hills Regional Park, with many routes available for responsible riders to enjoy.

Whether you are out with your family or looking for a more gruelling challenge there are routes for all levels of fitness and ability as most of the 100km of paths in the Pentlands are suitable for cycling.

You can download a guide for cycling in the Pentlands with routes and advice on using them or pick up a hard copy from Boghall Farm.

Other journey planning resources

The Bike Station's Innertube map highlights the city's extensive network of traffic-free paths and how they connect with each other.

Cycle Maps of East Lothian, Midlothian and West Lothian are available from Spokes, the Lothian cycle campaign. You can order them by cheque/post, on-line (Bike Trax / Edinburgh Bicycle Co-op) or buy them at bike/book shops in the Edinburgh area.

National Cycle Network - find the nearest route in your area with an on-line map or you with an iPhone app. Local area maps of the network can also be purchased through the Sustrans shop or you can try one of their suggested routes in your area.
