Benefits for people on low income

Getting extra benefits

Whether you are working or not, if you are on a low income, you could be entitled to extra weekly benefits to top up what you have coming in.

You could also get help with your rent and council tax through housing benefit, or council tax benefit.

These benefits are all means tested. This means that the savings you have, and income from any other sources affect the amount you can get.

The benefits you could be entitled to depend on whether you:

  • work more than 16 hours a week
  • do not work or work less than 16 hours a week
