Many of the foreign consulates based in Scotland are located in Edinburgh.
Embassies and high commissions are largely based in London.  

There are different types of consular service.  Some countries have consulates based in Scotland which are staffed permanently and offer services such as assistance with visa applications.  A single asterisk (*) beside the name of the consular official denotes a 'career officer'.

There are also less formal arrangements and a country's interests are sometimes represented by an honorary consul.  Double asterisks (**) appear beside the names of 'honorary officers'  in the list below.  Three asterisks (***) beside the names listed denotes an official representative who may be either an associate, career or honorary officer
