Edinburgh Trading Standards warns that people are putting their sight at risk by wearing cosmetic contact lenses being sold illegally in Edinburgh .
Cosmetic lenses are coloured or patterned and are particularly popular among young people.
Trading standards officers said they were being sold illegally at some outlets in the Edinburgh area such as hairdressers, beauticians, markets and clothing outlets.
They can cause problems including corneal ulcers and infections.
General Optical Council (GOC) chief executive and registrar Samantha Peters said "It is important that consumers take the same degree of care when buying and wearing cosmetic lenses as with any other contact lenses. We urge the public to only buy cosmetic contact lenses from a registered optician or doctor. To avoid eye health problems, consumers should always receive ongoing care from their optician or doctor after a contact lens fitting, and follow instructions on hygiene, storage, wear time and lens life."
"Provided that cosmetic lenses are handled properly, and the prescribing practitioner's recommendations are followed, the risk of eye infection is very low."
The law states that lenses can only be sold where a registered optometrist, dispensing optician or medical practitioner is on the premises.
Sales of these lenses can either be reported to GOC on 020 7580 3898 or to Edinburgh Trading Standards.
