Trading standards warns Edinburgh residents to think carefully when looking at whether to have solar panels fitted to their homes.
Utility bill increases, and Government-backed incentives which suggest money can be made, are encouraging many people to consider solar panel installation. If installed correctly, it is claimed that solar panels can not only save the environment but also save you money.
A Which? investigation in June discovered that 75 per cent of installers overestimated the amount of energy their systems would produce.
Trading Standards advises Edinburgh residents to be wary of unscrupulous traders, and to carefully consider exactly what you are signing up for.
Officers suggest never doing business with door-to-door company salespeople, always get quotes from at least three companies before placing an order, and always get everything in writing.
Never pay more than 25 per cent of the contract price up front. Check that any deposit will be protected under warranty, or pay by credit card for further protection.
Remember that these contracts are often long term, and may not begin to 'pay for themselves' for many years. Are you prepared to invest your money for ten years or more, before seeing any return?
Remember that installation may require building regulations approval to ensure that your roof is strong enough to hold the extra weight, and may also require planning permission or listed building consent.
