Planning guidelines
About the Planning guidelines
The Planning guidelines provide detailed guidance on a range of topics. When making decisions on applications, the Planning service has to consider the development plan (the Structure Plan and Local Plans). The policies in these plans tend to be quite broad so to make things clearer guidelines have been created. These are non-statutory, but are regarded as material considerations in the determination of planning applications.
The guidelines give clear advice about how proposals can be drawn up to comply with planning policy, and you should consult them before making a planning application.
The guidelines also help answer common questions on topics such as double glazing in conservation areas, extensions and parking in front gardens. The guidelines are continually reviewed to ensure relevance. Before we make changes it is normal for us to consult the public before approval.
You can search the guidelines using our Planning guidelines directory.
