Energy and the Council

Reducing our energy use

Our energy policy

The Council has to reduce its energy use. By doing so, we will also reduce our carbon emissions and our tax liability under the Carbon Reduction Commitment.

We aim to use less energy to

  • light and heat our buildings, tenement stairs and streets
  • fuel our vehicles
  • run our electrical equipment.

The Council's Energy Policy aims to achieve a 20 per cent reduction in the energy we use in our buildings by 2020.  Carbon Trust Scotland helped us develop this policy.  You can download the policy and related procedures below.

Building design

Building design plays a key role in how sustainable buildings are and how much energy they use.  The Council's Edinburgh Design Guidance provides advice on how to design more sustainable buildings.  You can download the guide below.  You can also find out more on the Building and Design page.

Most Edinburgh schools are part of the Eco Schools programme.  Energy is one of the subjects covered.  The aim is to raise awareness and encourage pupils to take part in any decision-making or action to reduce energy use in their school.
