Our approach to opening and closing schools
Our aim is always to keep schools open. Unfortunately, no weather forecast can ever be perfect. That, combined with potentially severe weather, means we always have to keep our plans under review. We make every effort to keep people updated as soon as possible where we have to make changes.
Attending school during bad weather
We understand that these conditions are difficult and that it isn't possible for all children to attend school, however, simply closing the schools is very disruptive too. We need to provide an education service and it is our aim to do that as much as possible.
Parents should make their own judgement about whether to send children to school as we understand that it may be very difficult to make the journey.
Authorised absence from school
Absences caused by snow difficulties will be authorised. We do, of course, want to see as many pupils as possible at school.
Arrangements for transporting children
The Council will do everything it can to ensure that the home to school transport services, that are arranged by the Council, are maintained, whilst ensuring the safety of pupils, staff and contractors. To find out if a service you normally receive is running, contact the Council's Corporate Transport Unit on 0131 657 0000.
