Meadows to Canal (NCN75)

Project information

We are developing a new cycle route between the Union Canal and the Meadows and would like to get your feedback on these proposals. The carriageway and footways on Home Street will be resurfaced as part of this project. These projects together provide an opportunity to transform the street environment and improve the area for all users, residents and businesses; as well as providing a new cycle route for all abilities linking two of the city's main off-road paths.

On foot by bike

A design workshop was attended by local stakeholders, residents and businesses in February 2014 which resulted in the current proposals.

Objectives

The project will provide a major strategic link within our QuietRoutes cycle network and would link the west of Edinburgh to the city centre. The current cycle route is not suitable for all abilities of cyclist and the junction of Home Street and Gilmore Place is a major barrier to cycling in the area.

It is proposed to provide a safe standard of cycle route which meets our Quietroutes principles, off-road paths or quiet streets, as outlined in the Active Travel Action Plan.

Street improvements on Home Street will be undertaken as part of this project, including

  • the renewal of all footways
  • de-cluttering
  • carriageway resurfacing.

These measures will enhance the street environment for all users, residents and businesses in the area.

What happens next

The project is now being designed in more detail, taking in to account the feedback received on the initial proposals. There will then be further public consultation on the plans before the statutory processes are started. It is planned to construct the project in 2017/18.
