Second or holiday home owners discount

You may be able to get a discount on your Council Tax bill if you own a second home or a purpose built holiday home. This discount does not reduce your water and sewerage charges.

Second home

Following the Council Tax Amendment Regulations 2016, Council has the discretionary power to remove the discount currently awarded on second homes. On 9 February 2017, Council decided to remove the 10 percent discount which will take effect from 1 April 2017.

You may still be entitled to a discount on your Council Tax if you own a second home until 31 March 2017.

Holiday home

A purpose built holiday home is a property used for holiday lets. It either has to be vacated at certain times or is unfit to be used throughout the year.

We may offer a 50% discount if the property is a purpose built holiday home.

If you wish to find out more about purpose built holiday homes you should email your enquiry and details to incomeandbenefits@edinburgh.gov.uk

We regularly review our Council Tax discount requests. We may ask you to provide more information or evidence.
