Gaelic Language Plan
About the Gaelic Language Plan
Fàilte gu Dùn Èideann / Welcome to Edinburgh
Gaelic is considered a national asset and Edinburgh , as Scotland 's capital city, has a unique opportunity to promote and develop the language. Edinburgh is home to the second largest urban population familiar with Gaelic.
In preparing this plan, the Council is demonstrating its commitment to the aspirations and objectives included in the National Plan for Gaelic and the Gaelic Language ( Scotland ) Act 2005.
The City of Edinburgh Council prepared its Gaelic Language Plan for public consultation in September 2009. Consultation responses informed the draft submission to Bòrd na Gàidhlig (BnaG) in June 2010.
January 2011 Update
Discussions with Bòrd na Gàidhlig and the Scottish Government continue regarding the Education section of the Council's draft Gaelic Language Plan. The recommendations in the most recent Council report (PDF, 133kb), as amended by the Administration motion (PDF, 11kb) were approved.
September 2010 Update
Bòrd na Gàidhlig (BnaG)'s Planning Committee has made an initial assessment of the Council's draft Gaelic Language Plan. A further assessment will be made before formal submission to their Bòrd in February 2011.
The Bòrd has requested that the draft GLP under consideration is not posted on the website until it has been agreed. This will be posted, with a paper detailing how public responses influenced the GLP, as soon as possible.
