Residents’ permit information and guidance
You can only buy a parking permit for the house you live in. It aims to help you park closer to your home during the day.
You can apply for 1 permit per person and 2 permits per property.
A residents' parking permit does not guarantee you a parking place.
Please ensure that you park your vehicle only in permit holders or shared use parking places within your zone.
Permit holders only parking places are distinguishable by a sign alongside the parking place and the words Permit Holders Only painted on the ground.
Shared use parking places have a sign alongside the parking places showing Permit Holders or Pay at Machine.
In all zones permit holders can park free of charge in public parking places from 8:30am to 9am in their zone.
In zones 1 to 4 only, permit holders can also park from 5:30pm to 6:30pm, Mondays to Fridays, and from 1:30pm on Saturdays.
View a map of your zone by using our interactive parking map.
Please ensure that your vehicle is parked fully within the bay markings. Permit holders are not permitted to park on single or double yellow lines or in parking places reserved for specific users, such as disabled parking places, taxi ranks, doctors' parking places or in loading bays.
You can buy residents' permits in three, six or 12 month periods. Each driver is responsible for renewing their permit on time. You don't need to display your permit on parking holidays.
Cheques should be made payable to The City of Edinburgh Council
Motorcyclists and disabled persons' blue badge holders can apply for a residents' permit free of charge.

Permit mews areas
Only permit holders living in mews areas can park within them. There are signs at vehicle entrances displaying the mews number but there are no road markings within them. Mews area follow the same hours of operation of the main parking zone they are within.
Some big events, like the Tattoo, need parking places to be suspended for safe pedestrian access. If a large number of parking places are out of use permit holders will be allowed to park free of charge in public parking places. You will receive a letter with more details if this is the case. Please do not assume this will be the case as you may receive a parking ticket.
