Temporary parking permits
Short term permits for existing holders
You must hold a valid permit with us to qualify for a temporary permit. A temporary parking permit can only be issued for the permit holder.
We aim to process requests for temporary permits as soon as possible and we will contact you once your permit is ready. Please do not park in permit or shared use parking places until you have received an email from us.
Apply for a temporary parking permit in person, by email or post. We will need your
- full address
- vehicle registration
- permit number of your current vehicle.
If you apply by email we will issue a virtual permit which means that you don't have to display a paper permit on your vehicle but the vehicle will have a valid permit on our database. Applying by email is likely to be more convenient if you require a permit for a temporary vehicle.
If you are changing your address or permanently changing your vehicle we will need your old permit back so visiting the office is likely to be the quickest way to obtain your permit.
A temporary permit can be issued in the following circumstances.
Vehicle in garage
If your vehicle is in the garage for servicing we can issue a temporary permit for five days once we receive proof from the garage that the vehicle is in the garage being serviced and evidence linking you to the temporary vehicle. You do not need to return your existing permit.
If your vehicle is in the garage for damage repairs we can issue a temporary permit for up to 14 days once we receive proof from the garage that the vehicle is in the garage for damage repairs and evidence linking you to the temporary vehicle. You do not need to return your existing permit.
If you have purchased a new vehicle we can issue a temporary permit to park the old vehicle for up to 5 days once we receive the old permit, a completed application for the new vehicle and evidence linking you to the new vehicle.
Moved to another zone
If you have moved to another zone we can issue a temporary permit to park the vehicle at the previous address for up to five days once we receive
- the old permit
- a completed application for the new address
- evidence linking you to the new address, preferably confirmation that you have registered for Council Tax at the new address
There may be limited circumstances where we can consider issuing a temporary permit if there are problems processing your application.

The Permit team is based at the Drumbrae Hub, 81 Drumbrae Drive, EH4 7FE.
Opening hours are
- Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8:30am to 4:30pm
- Tuesday from 10am to 4:30pm
- Friday from 8:30am to 3:40pm
