City of Edinburgh Council

Leith Programme 2012-2014

About the Leith Programme

Essential works

There is essential work we need to do along Leith Walk, Constitution Street and Picardy Place:
  • Completing utility works
  • Traffic signal improvements
  • Road resurfacing and pavement replacement
  • Reinstating public artworks

Additional environmental works

Local people and businesses have told us we need to do more to improve these streets overall. There is an opportunity to do this through some proposed environmental improvements, and we have identified money from existing Council budgets to deliver these improvements. These are likely to include, as far as our budget will allow:
  • Improving pavements
  • Improvements for cyclists
  • More greenery and less clutter

We will work with local businesses to agree better solutions for the storage of waste, including trade waste, once all physical improvements to the streets are complete.

Work timescales - update

There is an indicative timescale for the start of work to the utilities infrastructure in Constitution Street and Leith Walk.

Work to the utilities infrastructure will start soon, with the contractor mobilising in the week beginning 28 January 2013 and working on site from the week beginning 18 February.

We will update these web pages next week with more detail and will also begin to prepare the notification letters for those properties adjacent to the work sites. We will provide as much detail as possible in these  letters.

Details on specific timescales along with any traffic management arrangements will be provided on these pages closer to the works start date

Any further detail or updates on the work will be published in the following places:

Once the utilities work is completed, contractors will begin to resurface the road along the entire length of Leith Walk and Constitution Street. In addition, the pavements will also be replaced. This will be done in sections to minimise disruption to residents and businesses.

Funding

A report to Finance and Resource Committee recommending funding for road and environmental improvements (separate and additional to the funding for completing utilities works) was agreed on 31 July 2012, with the following amendment:

"The Director of Services for Communities to ensure that the design team assesses a full range of options to give increased priority for cyclists, including dedicated and mixed use lanes, to complement the proposals of the Active Travel Action Plan."
