Open Data

Access data about Edinburgh and our services

Our Open Data Portal is continuing to add data sets with a regular release programme. We gather many types of data about our work to help us provide services and see where we can improve. We want to make this open so that other people can use it to help communities, organisations and businesses.

In our Open Data Strategy, we aim to

  • be more open about what we do
  • come up with new ways of doing things
  • create new opportunities for jobs and business.

As part of the strategy, we have agreed to the principles of the G8 Open Data Charter. You can download the charter on the GOV.UK website.

We hope that our data sharing may encourage innovation in the city. You can help us to find new ways to deliver services and create new systems to support the quality of life in Edinburgh.

There are a number of areas where local government data is already helping

  • transparency and democracy
  • participation
  • engagement with customers and communities
  • improved efficiency and effectiveness for local services
  • new knowledge from combining data and identifying patterns in large data sets.

We use our open data in our civic challenge programme, EdinburghApps. The competition encourages people to find innovative solutions to city issues. It has already led to a number of products now being delivered for the Council.

Unless otherwise indicated our data is being offered under the Open Government Licence for public sector information. You can download the licence below. Please make sure you read this and understand the responsibilities of the licence.

This website also includes an API. If you are interested in working with this you must register with the website and request a key. It's a good idea to get in touch with us at the email address below to discuss what you want to do so we can make sure you have access to exactly what you need.
