Edinburgh Canal Strategy

Since its rebirth as part of the Millennium Link Project, the Union Canal has come a long way from a derelict backwater to one of Edinburgh's most important assets.  The Canal is now enjoyed on a daily basis by people from across the city and beyond for boating, rowing, walking, and cycling.  It is also a focus for new development including new moorings, marinas, and other canal-focused activities.

As the canal is developed it must be protected and its potential maximised for the benefit of the wider community and the environment.  To help guide its development, the Council and British Waterways (Scotland) along with a wide range of stakeholders have prepared a strategy for the Canal within the Edinburgh area.  The strategy is supported by a Delivery Plan which identifies opportunities along the Canal.

The publication of the Strategy and Delivery Plan is a major milestone in the renaissance of the two hundred year old Canal.  The delivery of the Strategy will help create a desirable and sustainable waterway whilst allowing more of both visitors to the city and Edinburgh's citizens to appreciate the beauty of the Union Canal.
