Building Warrants

How long does a Building Warrant last

A Building Warrant lasts for three (3) years after it has been granted. This is known as the duration of a Building Warrant.

Please note that an amendment of warrant does not alter this three year period as the purpose of an amendment is to show any change to the original proposal.

If you need more time to complete the work you must apply to Building Standards before the end of the three year period as follows:-

For applications made on or after 1st May 2005, use Model Form C - Application To Extend Period Of Validity Of Building Warrant (download the form here) along with a cheque or bankers order for £50 made out to the 'City of Edinburgh Council'.

For applications made up to 30th April 2005 you apply by sending a letter along with a cheque or bankers order for £30 made out to the 'City of Edinburgh Council'.

If Building Standards agree to an additional period of time to complete your work and then you find that this  additional time is still not enough, you can apply again for an further additional period, this further application must be made before the end of the additional time already agreed.
