About planning permission

Do I need planning permission?

Before you carry out any building work, you should check whether you need planning permission.  It's not always possible for us to answer whether or not permission is needed without seeing plans so we suggest contacting our Planning Helpdesk.  You can do this by e-mail, phone or by coming into the helpdesk located by reception in Waverley Court, East Market Street.

Some work won't need permission and is known as 'Permitted development'.  If you suspect your building work is permitted development, we would still suggest applying for a Certificate of Lawfulness.  This is a legal document that confirms your building work is permitted.

Please remember that even if planning permission isn't needed, you may still require a building warrant for carrying out certain work.  Information on building warrants is available.
