Managing asbestos

The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006 require the owners or occupiers of non-domestic premises to make arrangements for the assessment and management of asbestos containing materials within their premises.

There are three essential steps to managing asbestos:

  1. Find out whether there is any asbestos in your premises and if so where it is and what condition it is in.
  2. Carry out a risk assessment to assess if people may be exposed to asbestos.
  3. Make a plan to manage the asbestos.

You should remember that asbestos is not dangerous unless it is disturbed. Asbestos which is in good condition and managed properly does not present a risk to health.

To find out more about managing asbestos visit the HSE website.

Asbestos removal

If a decision is taken to remove asbestos containing material, a licensed asbestos contractor must be used.

Edinburgh Scientific Services provide an asbestos testing service which helps to support the work of enforcement authorities they also provide this service on a commercial basis to businesses and the local community.

Asbestos disposal

Waste containing asbestos is classified as a special waste if it contains more than 0.1% asbestos. The Special Waste Amendment ( Scotland ) Regulations apply and you must complete a Waste Consignment Note. Contact the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) for more information.
