Day services for older people

Day care and support

You can find day services to help you keep active, meet with other people and give your carer a break.  You may only need these services for a short while, for example to regain confidence after a fall or spell in hospital.

Services include

Day centres and lunch clubs

Day centres can offer activities, classes and day trips.  Your personal care is free of charge, transport and meals are provided, usually at a low cost. Your needs have to be assessed if you want to go to a day centre.  You can ask Social Care for advice or to assess your needs.

Lunch clubs usually run for two to three hours and offer a hot meal.  Normally you will contribute towards the cost of your meal and transport, if provided. Lunch clubs are offered throughout the city.

You can search our directory of day services to find day centres and lunch clubs in Edinburgh.

One to one and group care

One to one care means that someone comes to your own home to help you to get out and about or support you in activities at home. They can help you with personal care and other needs as required.

Small group care means that you meet with 2 or 3 older people once a week in a paid carer's home.  You can enjoy each other's company or go out to places of interest.  Your needs have to be assessed if you want to have one to one or group care
