Adapt your home
Adaptations for homeowners, private and Council tenants
If it is difficult for you to get around your house because of mobility or health issues you may be eligible for a change to your home which can help you. These changes are called major adaptations and can be things like changing the layout of your kitchen or bathroom or putting ramps inside or outside your property. Read our eligibility criteria to understand who will qualify for a major adaptation.
Whether you own or rent your home you can contact Social Care who will arrange for an Occupational Therapist to visit you to assess your needs. If you meet the eligibility criteria the Occupational Therapist wil advise what changes to your property could help meet your needs and contact our Housing Adaptations Team. The Housing Adaptations Team will then arrange a visit to your property determine the extent of work needed to your property for the adaptation recommended by your Occupational Therapist.
If you own your own home, have a private let or rent from a Housing Association you may be entitled to grant aid to help pay for the changes to your home. The Housing Adaptations Team can let you know what aid you could be entitled to after you have been assessed by your Occupational Therapist.
If changes to your home are not necessary or not appropriate we will help you find an alternative solution like personal alarms or monitors, getting simple equipment or finding alternative accommodation.
