City of Edinburgh Council

Private fostering

Private fostering is where parents place their child with a person who is not a close relative for over 28 days. It is a private arrangement between parents and a carer or host family - completely different to a child being looked after by a council foster carer.

Private fostering can be very beneficial for all involved. It applies to children under 16, or under 18 if disabled. The Council does not usually get involved in private arrangements if they are for less than 28 days. However, longer arrangements must be registered with us, as councils have a duty to make sure that all children are safe and well cared for.

If you are a placing parent, a private carer or think you know of someone involved in private fostering you must let us know. We should be told of any proposed arrangement at least two weeks in advance. However, if the private fostering arrangement is already in place, we must be notified immediately.

Once you have notified us, we will offer you support and guidance.
