Carer support and advice

Assessing carers' needs

You are a carer if you look after your family, partner or friends who need help because they are ill, frail or have a disability. The care you provide is unpaid.

You can get an assessment of your needs if you are a carer who provides substantial and regular care.

The assessment is to work out with you

  • how much care you are providing and whether this is sustainable
  • what is needed to support you so you can continue caring and stay healthy.

About carer assessment

Firstly, we need to assess whether you provide "substantial and regular care".

To do this you can

  • Download and complete a Carer Self Assessment form where you will be asked to record details about the person you support, the amount of support you currently provide, and details of any help or services that you think would help you to continue in your caring role.
  • Contact us and we will take this information over the phone and give you advice.
If you are assessed as providing substantial and regular care, a Social Worker or Occupational Therapist will contact you to carry out a full assessment. This will look at the support you provide and determine your needs as a carer.

See our Carers' Guide to Carer Assessment  for further information.
