Abandoned vehicles are not only an eyesore, they can also become a target for vandals and become a danger to the public.
Please report vehicles that look as though they have been abandoned to your neighbourhood office. If the vehicle has been abandoned a notice will be attached to the vehicle and if the vehicle has not been moved by the time the notice expires, the Council will move it.
Please help us by having as much of the following information at hand as possible:
- where the vehicle is
- its colour
- registration number
- make
- condition
- how long it has been there
- if it is taxed and if so the expiry date.
You may be asked to provide your name, address and phone number.
Disposing of a vehicle
If you have a vehicle you wish to dispose of please contact a vehicle dismantler. Once the vehicle has been disposed of, ensure you notify the DVLA.
If the car is being disposed of due to a road traffic accident your insurance will take care of the removal for you.
Under the Refuse Disposal Amenity (Scotland) Act 1978 abandoning a vehicle is a criminal offence carrying a maximum penalty fine of £2,500, 3 months' imprisonment, or both.
Local authorities have the power to recover costs of removal, storage and disposal from the person responsible for abandoning the vehicle.
