Seafield Waste Water Treatment Works

Monitoring and assessment programme

Scottish Water is responsible for the collection and treatment of waste water in Scotland. Veolia Water is contracted to Scottish Water and they operate Seafield Waste Water Treatment Works. Find out about the processes used to treat waste at the plant on the Scottish Water website.

Scottish Water is required to take steps to minimise odour from Seafield Waste Water Treatment Works and has submitted an Odour Improvement Plan (OIP) to the Council for approval.

Monitoring programme

Work on the OIP should take around 2 years to complete and from June 2011 we will work with the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) to start a 1 year monitoring and assessment programme. The programme aims to

  • make sure odour complaints are responded to as quickly as possible
  • regularly assess set monitoring points in the Leith Links area

Community involvement

Leaflets explaining our role and aims of the monitoring programme have been sent to households in the Leith Links area and we encourage residents to share their experiences with us of any odour problems they have during the next 12 months. A number of households will be asked if they are willing to complete recording forms to help us find out how effective the Odour Improvement works have been. Residents can also accompany Officers on one of their planned assessment visits to Seafield. Contact us if you have any questions or if you would like to go along to a planned assessment visit.
