The Council has a duty to assess watercourses for any potential flooding. If necessary we will either enforce or take action to reduce the level of flooding or prevent flooding to property from watercourses.
There are approximately 104km of watercourses as well as culverted watercourses.
The Flood Prevention Team currently carries out monthly inspections and clearance of grilles on problem watercourses. We check more regularly during periods of bad weather.
The watercourse assessments along with known flooding issues and the CCTV of culverted watercourses are used to determine the works programme for the following year. Maintenance works are prioritised depending on the severity of the flooding as well as resources and funding available.
Any blockages to bridges and culverts that may lead to a river or burn flooding should be reported to the CLARENCE Contact Centre. You can contact them using the contact information the right hand side of this page.
