Water of Leith Flood Prevention Scheme

About the scheme

The Water of Leith Flood Prevention Scheme is being constructed in phases to suit available funding. Lagan Construction has been awarded a contract to construct phase 1 of the works, which covers that part of the river between Bonnington and Veitch's Square (Stockbridge). Work started on site during March and is anticipated to take some eighteen months to complete.

You can download a copy of the Committee Report on the tender award process.

The timing of future phases is dependent upon the availability of the required funds. At present the next phase of the scheme will involve providing flood defences in the Murrayfield area.  A proposal for this is being made ready for tendering with a view to following on from completion of the first phase.  At present no funding has been identified for flood defence works upstream of Murrayfield.

You can download a copy of the Water of Leith Phase 1 pdf. Individual Plans showing the proposed defences in Bonnington, St Mark's Park, Warriston, Stockbridge Colonies (east), Stockbridge Colonies (west) and Veitch's Square are available to download by clicking on the appropriate area.

Update 14 February 2012

The structural walls at Bonnington are now complete. The contractor is now applying the stone cladding before progressing with the landscaping works.

At Warriston Road , the steel piles are installed and construction of the flood wall is started. Upstream at Warriston Crescent, temporary flood defences are in place and work will soon get under way in building the permanent defences.

In the Stockbridge Colonies, all the piles are now in place and the concrete flood wall is beginning to be seen in places.

Sewer works are now completed at Veitch's Square and the piling operations are now started.

The works are generally progressing well with some disruption to the local residents. Meanwhile, the local wildlife has adjusted to the works going on in the river; ducks and otters have been sighted close by, seemingly indifferent to the contractor's operations.
