We are currently experiencing technical difficulties connecting to the online application system. Please make use of our downloadable application packs in the event of failure to connect to this system.
If your business sells food and drink you may be able to get a permit from the Council to put tables and chairs on the public pavement outside your business.
A tables and chairs permit allows you to put tables and chairs on the public pavement between 9am and 9pm, seven days a week and is issued for either six or twelve months.
You can search our directory, by street name, to find business premises that have been issued with a permit.
Applying
You can apply by downloading our application pack to post, by emailing us or by visiting us.
You can also complete an online application form .
The cost of a tables and chairs permit
Please note that revised charges came into operation on 1 April 2012.
The cost depends on the location of your business in relation to the World Heritage Site and the total area of pavement that you will be using.
If your premises are within the World Heritage Site
A twelve month permit costs £87.00 per square metre.A six month permit costs £43.50 per square metre.
Find out if your premises are inside or outside of the World Heritage Site by viewing our interactive map.
If your premises are outside the World Heritage Site
A twelve month permit costs £67.00 per square metre.
A six month permit costs £33.50 per square metre.
Extending the permitted hours until 10pm
A one hour time extension costs £150.00. We will carry out an assessment to determine if an extension can be given to you.
Timescales
It will take at least three weeks for us to process your application. The exact length of time will depend on the complexity of your request.
It is considered to be in the public interest that the authority process your application before it can be granted and so you must wait until you have formal approval before proceeding.
If your application is refused
You should discuss this in the first instance with the Roads Officer who made the decision. You have the right of appeal against any decision to refuse a permit for tables and chairs. An appeal must be made in writing within 28 days from when you recieve your decision letter.
