Regulating the Sale of Alcohol in Edinburgh

The Licensing (Scotland) Act 2005

Licensing

The Licensing (Scotland) Act 2005 was introduced to modernise and simplify the alcohol licensing system in Scotland.

It provides:

  • a robust monitoring and enforcement structure; and
  • greater opportunity for communities to have an input into the licensing system.

Its aim is to reduce underage drinking and binge drinking.

The legislation requires Councils to employ Licensing Standards Officers and introduced the five 'Licensing Objectives'.
