We have started the phased return to our policy of not collecting extra waste put beside bins or overfilled bins.

We have always had a policy of not picking up extra waste beside bins or overfilled bins, but had relaxed this as we allowed the changeover to fortnightly collections to bed-in. We are now at the stage where we are ready to move to the next phase and return to not picking up excess waste. You can find out more about our side waste policy.

If your bin has been missed please report it using our report a missed bin form. You can find your rubbish, food waste and garden waste collection days in our bin collection directory. You can check your collection times for red and blue boxes at Greenboxday.

Bin collection days have changed

Your green household bin, brown garden waste bin and grey food bin collections will now be on the same day of the week. We are continuing to collect grey food bins every week and your green and brown bins are being collected on alternate weeks (brown bin collections will go monthly in winter)

Collection times

Bins should be on the kerbside by 6am on your collection day. If your bin has not been emptied by 10pm, please check our Service Changes page. If your street/area is not listed then please use our report a missed collection form or send an email to waste@edinburgh.gov.uk or call 0131 529 3030.

If you have forgotten to put your bin out, you can take your waste to a Community Recycling Centre, book a special collection, or wait until your next collection day. Please remember that waste left at the side of your bin or overloaded bins cannot be collected.

Communal rubbish containers

Communal rubbish containers are collected either weekly or every other week. Please report missed collections or overflowing bins to waste@edinburgh.gov.uk or use our online form.

Rubbish sack collections in the city centre

We will collect household waste in sacks twice a week from city centre properties that do not have communal waste container. You can check your collection days on the kerbside sack waste collection guide. Find out about the modernising waste project.
